The amount of food that we find in supermarkets seems limitless which leads us to believe that our resources are endless. Behind the scenes, however, there is a whole structure put in place to ensure these resources are always accessible: what is known today as a little something called food distribution.

A LITTLE HISTORY

Food distribution originates from the Roman Empire. At the time, the population followed a diet based mainly on grains. The Roman government had to make sure that this resource was always available to the people. This gave place to “Annona” which originally meant “yearly return” and over time, came to represent the distribution of all pertinent foods in the Roman diet.

Food distribution, today, is defined as the process in which a general population is supplied with food. Centuries after the Romans, it is still considered one of the most important elements of our societal structure. It consists of a variety of companies, like Greenhouse, who import food from producers all over the world, store it in their warehouses and then deliver it to manufacturers, retailers, supermarkets, hotels, restaurants, etc. There are four different kinds of food distributors: broadline distributors (large variety of products in large volumes), speciality distributors (specialty items or food requirements), redistributors (small quantities of items for smaller distributors), and cash and carry (warehouse to purchase wholesale items, not delivered). Greenhouse Foodstuff Trading aims to be a “One stop shop” provider for the foodservice channel in the UAE, specializing in major international brands.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Food distributors have the responsibility to act as an intermediary between food products brands and other establishments with food requirements, and make sure that all the supplied resources are the best quality. For the past four decades, Greenhouse Foodstuff Trading has been importing premium products as well as a broad variety of choices: from Lebanese products, to Italian or even Asian products. Greenhouse Foodstuff Trading are always looking to expand their brand portfolios and provide different localizations in the Middle East with best in class food products, recipes, and innovative ways of presenting them.
